Death Cab for Cutie, “Tiny Vessels”

Death Cab for Cutie,
“Tiny Vessels”

“And you are beautiful but you don’t mean a thing to me.” This song has always called to me, maybe because I relate so much to it. In a society where hookups appear to be the norm, it’s always fascinated me how hookup culture is still shamed by my generation when the majority of us actively partake in it. Death Cab for Cutie embraces this awkwardness, leans into the inherent wrongness of a one-night stand, acknowledges that it happened, and is simply honest that it was nothing more than lust. It’s a crux, his inescapable sin, unrepentant. “So one last touch, and then you’ll go, and we’ll pretend that it meant something so much more. But it was vile, and it was cheap, and you are beautiful but you don’t mean a thing to me.”
